TRIBUTE TO WILLIAM KLEIN : L’OEIL DISSIDENT

From October 11 to 28, 2012, the Festival du nouveau cinéma and the Cinémathèque québécoise will celebrate American-born photographer and director William Klein as part of its tributes and retrospectives lineup. For the occasion, the unclassifiable artist will be in Montreal for the series of events – including a retrospective, an exhibition of his work, a master class and a Mode Montréal party – that point up his entire body of work.

Klein is a multitalented artist who uses photography, painting and film to cast his humanist gaze on subjects ranging from big cities to fashion to minority causes. To pay him tribute, the Festival and the Cinémathèque will start with a retrospective of his films as of October 11 at the Cinémathèque québécoise. Klein switched back and forth between documentary and fiction, short films and features. The titles to be screened are: Mr. Freedom; Grands soirs, petits matins; Far from Vietnam; Broadway by Light; Le Business et la mode; Espagne: un tremblement de ciel; Les troubles de la circulation; Départ en vacances: gare de Lyon; Cassius Clay champion du monde; Le Schisme noir: Malcolm X; Eldridge Cleaver, Black Panther; Festival Panafricain d’Alger (or Festival Panafricain de la Culture); Who Are You, Polly Maggoo?; Muhammad Ali, The Greatest; The Little Richard Story; Slow Motion; Hollywood, California: A Loser’s Opera; Le Couple témoin; Contacts; Mode en France; The French; In and Out of Fashion and Messiah.

From October 11 to November 4, an exhibition of his photographs – humorous, humanist and invariably provocative – will be held in the Foyer Luce Guilbeault at the Cinémathèque québécoise. The vernissage will take place on October 17 in the presence of the artist. There will also be a meet-and-greet with Klein to mark the screening of his second film about the fashion world, Who Are You, Polly Maggoo? followed by a Mode Montréal party at Festival headquarters, the Agora Hydro-Québec in UQÀM’s Cœur des sciences.
