OPENING EVENING : DECLARATION OF WAR by VALÉRIE DONZELLI

With the actress and director Valérie Donzelli, and co-writer Jérémie Elkaïm in attendance

Declaration of War, the second feature by Valérie Donzelli (The Queen of Hearts), will kick off the 40th edition on Wednesday, October 12, at the Imperial Cinema (Centre Sandra & Leo Kolber, Salle Lucie & André Chagnon), with the director and co-writer Jérémie Elkaïm in attendance. Starring Donzelli and Elkaïm, the film (based on their true-life experience) tells the story of a young couple’s fight to save their sick child. Declaration of War is distributed in Quebec by Seville Pictures/Entertainment One.

CLOSING EVENING : MONSIEUR LAZHAR by PHILIPPE FALARDEAU

Monsieur Lazhar, the fourth feature by Philippe Falardeau, will close the 40th edition. The Festival du nouveau cinéma has supported the Quebec director’s work since the beginning, screening his debut film, The Left Side of the Fridge (La moitié gauche du frigo), in 2000, as well as his second, Congorama, which opened the 35th edition. Monsieur Lazhar, which won two awards (namely the Public Choice Award) at its recent world premiere on the Piazza Grande at the Locarno festival, tells the story of an Algerian new arrival to Montreal, Bachir Lazhar (played by Fellag), who steps in at the last minute to replace a teacher who died tragically. Grappling with personal problems, he meets two young kids who are also having a tough time. Produced by Luc Déry and Kim McCraw, of micro_scope, Monsieur Lazhar is adapted from Evelyne de la Chenelière’s play. The film is distributed in Quebec by Christal Films/Entertainment One and will be in theatres on October 28.
