POLAND | 127 minutes | 2013

A jubilant backlash to the obscurantism inflicted by Communist diktat of the 1980s. A biopic tribute to the leader of the Gdansk shipyard workers’ uprising, violently suppressed by the Communist regime. The Polish director delivers a stirring, nuanced tale that interweaves historical fact with the private persona of the charismatic Walesa. A lesson in the determination of an emblematic figure fighting for justice, the feature film also benefits from its director’s masterful integration of authentic details.
