Film school graduate Sunhi returns to her college to ask her old professor for a recommendation letter to support her further studies in the U.S. While on campus, she runs into her ex-boyfriend, Munsu, and meets a new suitor, Jaehak. As an object of both men’s desires, she must carefully keep each where she can see him while not revealing to either the attentions of the other. A series of chance meetings in restaurants, cafés and on the street see the male characters trying to advance ever closer to their goal of winning Sunhi’s affections. The 15th feature from Hong Sang-soo, pre-eminent filmmaker on the contemporary South Korean scene, is a refreshing comedy full of light-hearted romantic intrigue. With his usual rigour and attention to detail, Hong brilliantly choreographs this emotional game of ping-pong in which the characters never stop projecting their feelings outward, the better
to understand their relation to the world. Our Sunhi is an ingenious and profound college fable. It earned Hong the Leopard Award for Best Director at the 66th Locarno Film Festival.
