In this charming romantic comedy (think Goddard meets Kazan), a celebrity leaves the hustle and bustle of Tokyo and travels to Kyushu to help two lovers who have yet to meet. But in his quest to understand true love, Daisaku (played by Yujiro Ishihara, Japan’s biggest star in the 50s and 60s) risks losing the affections of his manager/girlfriend (Ruriko Asaoka, another huge star then at the apex of her career). An important film about the eternal search for freedom that’s funny, touching and still holds up today.
