Synopsis :

Yachine and his older brother Hamid do their best to support their family. They’ve spent their entire lives in a slum outside Casablanca and struggle to pull themselves out of the poverty they were born into. Hamid gets sucked into drug dealing and petty crime. After he’s arrested and locked up, he undergoes a radical change and converts to Islam. When he gets out of jail, he persuades Yachine and his friends to join the fundamentalist brotherhood. Screened recently at Cannes in the Un Certain Regard program, this solemn, tightly woven tale follows the fates of two brothers who find refuge in a radical Islamic group. Loosely based on the suicide bombings in Morocco in May 2003, this bold, sharp and at times terrifying film shows how marginalized young men are the ideal targets for extremists looking to recruit. With his clear-eyed look at religious indoctrination, Franco-Moroccan filmmaker Nabil Ayouch tackles a difficult topic without ever resorting to simplistic explanations or dubious arguments.
