Éléments

The elements come together, a vivid picture show from far and up close for us to discover, an intimate moment. From earth and fire, a solitary fly-by, a retreat in the woods and a musical world without a sound—these elements of their environment dictate the mood.

Frontière

Formal explorations of borders: between the shadow that hides and the light that sculpts, of course, but primarily borders that transgress time (Vincent Grenier, Flatform). or the more metaphorical border in Acrobat (the latest film by Eduardo Menz), which separates anonymity (shadow) from performance (light).

Projet Jafar Panahi / Jafar Panahi Project

october 2011. after the iranian filmmaker Janar Panahi lost his appeal against a six-year prison sentence and twenty-year ban on making films, travelling or giving interviews, i decided to invite filmmakers i knew to make very short films in support of Panahi’s release. in particular, i sought out directors from animation and experimental cinema, areas usually thought to be less politically engaged than documentary. i asked that the films be produced on a strictly volunteer basis: zero budget for producer, director, technicians and production support. Within a few days, my call had already elicited a dozen responses. The Projet Jafar Panahi /Jafar Panahi Project will continue to grow until Panahi is released. This year’s FnC will show the first four films completed as part of this project. Presented in rotation at the start of short-film line-up Free Jafar Panahi : Free Speech | Steven Woloshen Libérez Jafar Panahi : La Cage | Pierre Hébert Libérez Jafar Panahi : Des femmes libres | Francis Desharnais Libérez Jafar Panahi : Joda | Theodore Ushev

Spectacle

These three medium-length films, while very different, all take a radical approach to the question of representation: a university lecture based on Avatar, a strange game of cat and mouse between the image and a Malcolm Lowry story and a rehearsal for a Christmas play on the theme of the Annunciation to the virgin Mary... Fascinating.

The Beauty Never Ends: Emily Vey Duke and Cooper Battersby

A PROGRAM OF SHORT MOVIES BY EMILY VEY DUKE AND COOPER BATTERSBY, CURATED BY MIKE HOOLBOOM At the occasion of the launching of the book The Beauty Is Relentless: The short movies of Emily Vey Duke and Cooper Battersby edited by Mike Hoolboom. The literary post-punk short films of Emily Vey Duke and Cooper Battersby have been tearing up the festival/ gallery circuit for the past 15 years with their blend of bedroom pop, perverse animations and hopes for fame. Funny, touching and ambitious in scope, their work continues to deal with many contemporary themes: addiction, spirituality, identity, relationship dynamics and the ongoing quest for joy. “[Here] exists a kind of nakedness, a peeling away of propriety, a questioning of behavioural and social systems—and yet I find their work refreshingly playful and deeply generous.” — Deborah Stratman, University of Illinois at Chicago “Often working with the disconnects between human and animal—and their urge to reconcile the sterile mechanics of our world versus the intuitive viscerality we keep buried within—their dark sense of humour has yielded a slate of bizarre taxidermies, installations, videos and sculpture, all tinged with a gutsy, mystical longing that’s sweet, sinister, hilarious and disturbing all at once.” — Murray Whyte, Toronto star
