Projet Jafar Panahi / Jafar Panahi Project

october 2011. after the iranian filmmaker Janar Panahi lost his appeal against a six-year prison sentence and twenty-year ban on making films, travelling or giving interviews, i decided to invite filmmakers i knew to make very short films in support of Panahi’s release. in particular, i sought out directors from animation and experimental cinema, areas usually thought to be less politically engaged than documentary. i asked that the films be produced on a strictly volunteer basis: zero budget for producer, director, technicians and production support. Within a few days, my call had already elicited a dozen responses. The Projet Jafar Panahi /Jafar Panahi Project will continue to grow until Panahi is released. This year’s FnC will show the first four films completed as part of this project.
